Abstract
The rapid shift towards digital payment systems has acceler- ated, prompting central banks across the world to consider Cen- tral Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Here, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched the Digital Rupee (e₹) to streamline payment processes, reduce management of cash expenses, and promote financial inclusion. The paper reflects on the concept, design, opportunities and challenges of the Digital Rupee in In- dia, utilising secondary data published by RBI and more recent academic literature. The current literature suggests that people have become more aware and have a positive attitude toward adoption, presenting a great opportunity to adopt digital govern- ance and cross-border payments. Nevertheless, the issues of digital exclusion, cybersecurity, and privacy are still critical. As it is presented in the article, the effective implementation of the Digital Rupee should be staged with the help of digital literacy programs and effective regulatory protection
